AUS vs SA: Mitch Owen’s Injury Forces Australia Into Three Changes for Series

Australia’s white-ball campaign in South Africa has taken a heavy hit as Mitch Owen, Matt Short, and Lance Morris have all been ruled out due to injuries. Owen suffered a concussion after a bouncer from Kagiso Rabada struck his helmet in the second T20I, ruling him out for at least 12 days.

Short’s lingering side strain from the West Indies tour and Morris’ back soreness have forced Cricket Australia into three last-minute squad changes ahead of the third T20I and upcoming ODI series.

[REPORT] Owen’s Concussion Alters Australia’s Plans

The third T20I in Durban on August 16 was meant to be another exciting match in the ongoing Australia vs South Africa series. Cricket Australia had to make changes because Owen got hurt in the second T20I.

The all-rounder hit a short ball from Kagiso Rabada and it hit him right on the helmet. Because of the rules for concussions, he cannot play for at least 12 days.

He will miss the last T20I and all three ODI games on August 19, 22, and 24. Injuries in cricket can feel like losing an important piece in a game of chess at a key time.

For Australia, Owen not being there creates a hole in both batting strength and bowling mix.

[TRENDING] Matt Short and Lance Morris Join the Casualty List

Owen’s injury is bad, but now the Aussies have also lost Matt Short and Lance Morris for the rest of the tour. Short, who plays for both teams, has been dealing with a side strain he got during the West Indies trip.

He has not gotten better fast enough to play. At the same time, Morris—chosen only for the ODI team—said he felt pain in his lower back while getting ready.

He went back to Perth for more tests. With many things happening, these problems have made the team think again about their plans for hitting and bowling.

Australia’s ODI Squad for South Africa

Australia has a strong ODI team, even with some issues. The team, led by Mitchell Marsh, has a mix of experienced players and fresh talents.

The table below shows the new ODI team after a few players left:

Player Name Role Notes
Mitchell Marsh (c) All-rounder Captain, middle-order stabiliser
Xavier Bartlett Bowler Fresh pace option
Alex Carey Wicketkeeper-bat ODI regular
Ben Dwarshuis Bowler Left-arm variation
Nathan Ellis Bowler Death-overs specialist
Cameron Green All-rounder Batting depth, medium pace
Aaron Hardie All-rounder All-round flexibility
Josh Hazlewood Bowler Senior paceman
Travis Head Batter Top-order aggressor
Josh Inglis Wicketkeeper-bat Backup keeper, versatile hitter
Matthew Kuhnemann Bowler Left-arm spin
Marnus Labuschagne Batter Middle-order anchor
Adam Zampa Bowler Lead spinner

The Aussies have a lot of good players, so they will be looking for an easy change before the important games.

Closing Thoughts from the Writer

As a writer, this feels like a reminder that in cricket, momentum is really weak, like a dry leaf blowing in the wind. Australia is now dealing with a test of power and adaptability.

If they can change these problems into a chance for new people to do well, this series might still have the excitement fans want. But right now, their way to win seems more like a thin line than a big road.
