Ballad of a Small Player, Edward Berger’s latest movie featuring Colin Farrell portraying a luckless gambler in Macau, has received respectable reviews ahead of its North American debut.
The movie had its world premiere at the 52nd Telluride Film Festival last month, and is scheduled for a limited release in the United States on October 15 and in the UK on October 17, before being available to stream on Netflix on October 29.
The Netflix writeup of the film says that “Lord Doyle is laying low in Macau – spending his days and nights on the casino floors, drinking heavily and gambling what little money he has left.
“However, in hot pursuit is Cynthia Blithe – a private investigator ready to confront Doyle with what he is running from. As Doyle tries to climb to salvation, the confines of reality start to close in.”
69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes
Currently, the film has a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Farrell drawing most of the acclaim from critics. Carla Renata of The Wrap praised the star’s “magnificent, charmed performance” and The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee said: “Farrell is the real winner here.”
In contrast, Peter Debruge of Variety stated that the film “looked great, but lacks the fundamental human insight to make it a winner.”
